Who are we?

About the Clemson Turtle Team:

Get to Know Us

IMG_5762.JPG

Hannah Meredith is a master's student in Wildlife and Fisheries Biology at Clemson University. She is studying Eastern box turtle behavior and conservation outreach.

Her advisor, Dr. Kyle Barrett, is interested in the effects of urban development and climate change on wildlife, especially reptiles and amphibians.

Several undergraduate students participate in this project every semester through Clemson's Creative Inquiry program.

Our Project

Since box turtles frequently occupy residential and recreational areas, we aim to use outreach to collect important data, educate locals, and build a community that is enthusiastic about turtle conservation. Through community outreach, educational efforts, and unique data collection methods (turtle QR codes!), Clemson locals can contribute significantly to our projects.

We are studying: â€‹

  • Box turtle behavior and habitat preferences

  • Box turtle movement

  • Box turtle personality

  • Impacts of urban development on box turtles

  • Public engagement with box turtles and research

Data Collection

Clemson citizens can help us by scanning the QR code on the turtle's shell and answering questions about the turtle's location, habitat, and behavior.

You can also help us by reporting non-tagged turtles in the Clemson area.

Community Engagement

We would like to involve the Clemson community in box turtle research, so they can learn about these marvelous creatures that live around us, sometimes in our backyards!

Join our project to help us learn about public engagement with box turtles!

Scan the turtle

Our citizen science project:

Some of our study turtles have QR codes on their shells.

If you spot one, scan the QR code to tell us where you found the turtle and what it was doing!
